AVS Fencing Don a Set Of Wheels For The Stock Hatchback Motorsport Series

The involvement of AVS Fencing has seen the firm support their own after the success of last year, where the fencing specialists sponsored just one car in the Hot Hatchback Series at the 750 motor club, for owner driver Mike Webb otherwise known as their finance director.

On the most recent race event held at Snetterton on the 19^th and 20^th September, both cars were in attendance including Rory Cooper in his Saxo VTR and Mike Webb in his Saxo VTR. Although both drivers suffered with poor qualifying, placing them at positions 24 and 21 on the grid, the heat saw Rory finish at position 13 and Mike at position 14 putting them both in the final which was a great achievement.

Despite the tough task ahead of the duo, Mike managed to continue to make progress and by lap 8 he was up to 15th place, taking a staggering 19 places. This was unusual and it was a tremendous drive until on the last corner whilst breaking late in an attempt to take 14th place, Rory hit the car in front damaging his bumper and smashing the front lights amongst other bits. The net result was that he dropped 4 places in the last 200 yards due to damage, but it was still a great drive, proving that despite the car needing further development this winter work Rory and the car has genuine top 10 potential.

Mr Whiting from the fencing panel specialists added, “We have really enjoyed following the progress of Mike and Rory, and with a bit of luck we will be able to continue our sponsorship of the duo way into 2010.”

With so many different types of fencing available it can be difficult to select which is the most appropriate solution for our gardens. The main types of garden fencing panel are familiar to most people. Lap panels are all six feet wide and come in various heights from three to six feet. They are designed to slot in between timber or concrete fence posts and it is the easiest type of fencing to erect.

Close board panel fencing is similar as it is made up of timber or concrete posts between which the panels are fitted. Gravel boards are also used at the base of the fence which keeps the panels from rotting as well as acting as a soil retainer.

Before you begin to mark out your decking area make sure that you are fully prepared. You will need pegs and string, weed suppressant membrane, gravel, decking boards, timber joists and noggins, screws and nails, a shovel & spade , a saw, a hammer and screwdriver.

Decking construction can be easily separated out into five easy steps, but make sure that you allow a few days to complete the work in full to allow for the size of the decking you are creating.

1) Firstly mark out the proposed area you are going to cover with decking and make sure that all of your furniture will fit into this space. Once you are happy with this, clear away any vegetation and mark the area out using pegs and string, to make sure that it is square. Then cut your weed suppressant membrane to fit and secure in place using gravel.

2) Attach a timber joist as a plate to your house wall using spacers for ventilation and drainage. This will determine the height for your deck, ideally it should be at least 150mm below the damp proof course. Make sure that you then fix this securely, as this will be load-bearing.

3) Attach a joist at each end of the wall-plate, Carpenters Mate landscaping screws are ideal for this. To support these joists at the corners of the Deck you can either fix these to timber fence posts or rest them of concrete blocks or slabs bedded on mortor.

4) You now need to secure a further joist at the other end opposite the wall-plate and then add joist hangers along the wall-plate and to the end joist opposite at 400- 500mmmm intervals. Once happy with construction nail some noggins between the joists to strengthen the framework.

5) Now you are ready to lay your decking, but be wary, as this is the most visible part of the project, and special care should be taken to make sure that it is both level and of a high quality. It is possible to lay the decking boards in many different ways, but whichever way you choose to lay your deck, make sure that you hold each decking board in place with two decking screws at every joist.

6) When all of your decking boards have been laid, make sure that the boards cover the edges of the side joists.

When repairing a closeboard or feather edge fence, that has loose timber arris rails, it is important to invest in arris rail repair brackets, which actively works to splint a fence and acts as an excellent quick fix, as it avoids taking down and rebuilding the fence in full, saving time and money.

Another common problem encountered by fence owners is where the fence post breaks at ground level. If this is the case, it is advisable to purchase a concrete repair spur, which is a short length of concrete. If your fence post is suffering from rot, dig a hole along side the timber fence post, which may require a concrete breaker and place the new concrete spur into the ground and concrete around it, securing it to the post, using coach screws or bolts. The concrete repair spur is a godsend for owners of closeboard fences, as with these it is time consuming to replace the whole fence post.

If on the other hand, your fence panels need to be replaced, start by measuring the other fence panels, to get the right panel size for the broken sections, and make sure that you go for panels of the same size as the existing panels. Once you have the replacement panels, remove the broken pieces of the existing fence panel by hammering and prying them away from the fence posts, whilst pulling out any nails.

Then align the new fence panels against the fence posts and nail them firmly in place, again using galvanized nails. Finally make sure that you stain or paint it to match the other panels, and your fence is fully restored.

Mr Whiting added, “It is also possible to create bridges out of railway sleepers, using just one or two units. Laying them over a small pond or stream is a great idea for those who would like a quick solution to finishing off a garden space. For those who are keen to create a much larger bridge using sleepers, this is again very possible, but you would require steel girders to create a frame to support the sleepers.”

AVS Make Light Work Of Met Posts With Step-By-Step Guide

It’s out with the old and in with the new for many a garden enthusiast as summer gets fully underway, but the thought of erecting a new garden fence to compliment your existing handy work, can be enough to bring even the most avid gardener out in a sweat. Now AVS Fencing, a leading provider of garden fencing and decking boards, are diminishing uncertainty with their step-by-step guide to erecting a fence panel style fence using a met post.

Dubbed as the easiest way to erect a fence, the traditional met post has long been used as a substitute for concrete, removing the need for extensive digging, larger wooden fence posts and removing the worry associated with rot and decay.

Mark Whiting, marketing director of the firm who offer everything for the green-fingered including picket fencing and railway sleepers, said, “I would certainly advise anyone putting up a fence this summer to consider using met posts. Using concrete post bases means that it could take you double the time or cost you so much more if you are paying labour costs for someone else to do the job. Met posts are extremely useful because they use a wedge grip to hold your posts in place and use specially formulated red oxide paint to protect the post spike from rust.”

Rot- something which can be a problem for fence posts which are inserted directly into the ground can be avoided by using met posts. Inserting a traditional fence post spike like those of the met post brand can be done in five easy steps...

Your first job should be to mark out the line of your fence. Then using a met post driving tool and a sledgehammer to tap in the first met post using short firm strokes.

Make sure that you continually check that the met post is vertical after a few strokes with the sledgehammer by using a spirit level and make sure that it does not twist out of alignment with each stroke.

If your met post has twisted out of alignment, simply twist it back into line before continuing to drive the met post in with short firm strokes until you are happy that it is both level and vertical. Continue until the box on the met post is around one centimetre above the ground

Now slot the wooden fence post into the box on your met post spike and tap it in until it hits the bottom, now all that is required is to fix the fence panel onto the fence post and fasten into place using galvanised nails directly through the battens or using met clips.

Erect another fence post alongside your first, using steps one to four and you are well on the way to finishing your fence- well done!

How To Erect A Picket Fence, by the AVS Fencing Team

Today I am going to talk about erecting a garden picket fence using the easy to erect ready assembled panels of wooden fencing. AVS Fencing also sell a type of loose picket fencing it is listed under palisade fencing in the on line shop.

How much fencing is required?
Measure your fence lines and divide by 1.80m, this will tell you approximately how many panels of picket fencing you will require. Panels can be shortened very easily by cutting if needed.

The Fence Posts
I would recommend erecting the picket fence on 75x75mm AVS Fencing 15 year Guaranteed treated fence posts with 900mm high picket fencing use a 2.4m long post cut into two and for the 1200mm high fencing use a 1.8m long post. When cutting the post make sure that the cut end is situated upper most and not buried in the ground and be sure to treat the tops of the posts with end coat this way you will maintain the AVS Fencing 15 year guarantee on the fence post and the posts will give you a good long life.

When building the picket fence the posts are set behind the panels, the panels are butted up and nailed or screwed to the front face of the post, I found that carpenters mate decking screws were an ideal product to fix the picket fencing panels to the fence posts allow 8 screws per panel.

To cut or not to cut?
If the panels are taken without cutting and are butted together it leaves just the right amount of room for one individual pailing to be fixed over the top of the joint in front of the post while AVS Fencing don’t currently sell matching additional loose fence pailings, you may well have some available from cutting down a panel or choose to purchase an extra panel. However if this is not the case don’t worry because the fencing works just as well when the ends of the picket fence panels rails are trimmed back by approximately 35mm each. This will ensure that the spacings between the panels are just right.

How far out of the ground will the posts be?
It is recommended that you allow 50mm between the ground and the underside of the picket fence panel and is also recommended you stop the post well short of the top of the panel in fact just above the top rail this will mean that for a 900 high picket fencing panel the posts are approximately 800mm above the ground.

The steps to erect a picket fence
Decide if you will be using the picket fencing panels at full length or trimmed back.
Lay the panels on the ground adjacent to the fence line to establish the positions for the posts.
Set up a string line if required to get the fencing straight.
Dig the post holes, concrete the first post into the ground using Post Mix
Fix the picket fencing panel to that first post, support the panel with a block of timber under to get the panel level and concrete in the next post in the right position for the panel and proceed along the fence line fixing one panel at a time.

Picket Fencing Gates
A matching gate for your picket fence can be purchased from the AVS Fencing on line shop the picket fence gate kit comes complete with all the necessary hinges, latch and gate stop, it is recommended that you use a 100mm gate post. The gate post is unlike the fence posts to the full height of the fence so for a 900 high picket fence use a 1.5metre long 100x100 post. The adjacent picket fencing panels will fix to the front face of the gate post and the gate will fix to the rear face of the gate post. Don’t forget to fit the gate stop timber batten to prevent damage to the gate latch.
